Though having help and guidance from a structured program like the 123Diet can make weight loss easier, it still has the potential to be difficult. But it's certainly not impossible. One important factor that distinguishes the weight-loss winners from the losers may be social support.

Studies have shown that people who started on diet programs that have a social component and people who enrolled in diet programs with their friends were far more likely to keep their weight off than the lone wolves.

Interestingly, another study also found that some types of support are more valuable that others, with positive support winning over purely instructive support. It tracked a group of dieters who had each lost around 10 percent of their body weight, and found that the dieters who maintained their loss received compliments and active participation from their support system, while the ones who regained their weight had instead received verbal instructions and encouragements.

So if you want to support a friend's weight loss, just advice and encouragement isn't enough; join them in their healthy habits or do something practical to make their life easier, and be sure to compliment them for the hard work they've already done!!

To obtain better support in your own life, you should start by asking for it by explaining your goals to your family and friends. Even if they're not up to changing their own lifestyle, they may think twice about inviting you out for calorie-laden cocktails or bringing home fatty takeout while you're mixing up a healthy meal.

Your friends and family can also help support you in practical ways, like shopping for healthy ingredients or cooking if you're too busy, or watching your kids while you go to the gym. While it may be hard to ask for help or to prioritize your weight loss over your loved ones' feelings and desires, in the end they too will benefit from a healthier, happier, and more confident you.

Your workplace can also be an asset. If that one co-worker is always complaining about her extra pounds, try asking if she wants to take a walk together at lunch hour, or to help you start a health challenge at your office.

Many gyms may also have online fitness communities that can help you meet local people with similar goals, or you could try searching for like-minded friends at a workout class. Maybe a close friend can be a diet buddy to commiserate and plan healthy meals with, or a workout buddy who will accompany you to the gym. That way, the fun you're having and the desire not to let the other person down creates an incentive to stay on track. A partner could also inspire you to quickly get back to the grind if you do fall off the wagon.

Professional support is another option if your real-world support system is lacking. If you're having a particularly hard time sticking with a diet or getting in shape, the advice of a dietitian, therapist, or personal trainer may be able to help you achieve your goals.

Finally, if you do come across any naysayers, during your weight loss journey, don't let them get you down! Someone who displays a negative attitude towards your weight loss could just be jealous, or ashamed about their own unhealthy habits and not ready to make a change. Other people have made peace with their larger size, which is also a perfectly valid choice; but it shouldn't interfere with your decision to lose weight in a healthy way that works for you.
